Neighborhood

Laurel

The Laurel District gets its name from the “Laurel Grove Park” residential tract, established in 1900 adjacent to the contemporary boundaries of the Laurel District

MacArthur, the main artery in Laurel, serves as its business district, with mom-and-pop businesses and eateries. Gerardo’s Restaurant serves up authentic Mexican dishes, Phnom Penh House provides Cambodian and Asian fusion entrees, Communité Table offers a to-go menu as well as eat-in and Full House Cafe is a busy breakfast and brunch restaurant. Residents demonstrate neighborhood pride at the annual Laurel Street Fair, which celebrates local food and music.

Twelve-acre Dimond Park runs along the Laurel District 's western side, with the newly enhanced Sausal Creek, oak and redwood trees landscaping the green space. Amenities include picnic areas, playgrounds, and a swimming pool.

Laurel is a diverse neighborhood in Oakland, home to Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino, Laotian, Cambodian, Korean, Salvadoran, Mexican, and Tongan communities. Houses range from 1920s-era bungalows to newer contemporary and traditional dwellings.

In 2006, Golden Associates created the Laurel District Gateway to define the "Laurel Commercial District". Components include signs bridging McArthur Boulevard proclaiming "Laurel" using an 'arts and crafts' style and a laurel leaf motif.
